All 10 newsletters, if approved as applications by Apple, will permanently remain on the App store and receive a certificate of commendation.

The top 10 downloaded newsletters (as applications from the App store)
will be announced 1-2 months after contest closes on 28th Aug 2010.
These top 10 downloaded newsletters will permanently remain on the App store and receive a certificate of participation.

All participating schools will get 1 year's access to Kragen for free.

Results & Winners:
Judging will take place from 28th Aug - 1st Sept 2010. Judges' choice is final. Results will be announced on 2nd Sept 2010 and the iAuthor will be contacted via telephone and email.

If the iAuthor is an individual, he/she must be present on 4th Sept 2010 for the forum with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Mr. Teo Chee Hean at Scape Youth Park.

If winning newsletter is from a team, team must send one representative for the forum.

Omnitoons may contact, in addition to the iAuthor, other entrants to participate in the forum.
 
 
     
 

Open to:

All students of Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges (JCs) and International Schools.
Participants can either form a team with maximum 4 members or choose to contest as individuals.
Each school is allowed to send 5 newsletters in total.

Theme:
Engineering.
Students can pay tribute to the discipline or show off any invention they may have created.

Task:
Each team/individual must create a newsletter using Kragen. It can consist of text, videos and/or graphics.

Text articles can be up to 300 words long and videos can be up to 3 minutes long.

A substantial newsletter would consist of at least 3 articles. This could be 3 text articles or, 3 videos or, 3 graphics or, 2 text articles and 1 video or, 1 text article, 1 video and 1 graphic. It could appear in ANY combination but a good newsletter captures the theme well.
 
Online Registration & Training:
A teacher has to be the point of contact between the school and Omnitoons. The teacher must fill in his/her particulars and register the total number of participants from his/her school.

Early Bird Registration: Training will take place at Science Centre Singapore, from 2nd- 6th Aug 2010. The available timeslots will be shown during registration and teachers can pick a session. Omnitoons cannot guarantee that chosen timeslot will be available and will inform teacher of result.

If a school is unable to get a session for any reason, Omnitoons will come down to the school to train participants.

Contest opens on 10th Aug 2010 and closes on 28th Aug 2010, 12 noon.

 
     
 
Our panel of judges are experts in their respective fields and will be assessing the newsletter based on
- Standard of Content (relevance to theme, quality of research, effort, etc)
- Standard of English (good grammar, clear, concise, etc)
  - Attractive Layout
- Creativity (in conveying text articles, videos, artwork, etc)

Margaret Thomas
Margaret Thomas is a respected writer and editor with nearly 30 years of print and online media experience. She held senior editing positions at The Business Times, The Singapore Monitor and TODAY, and was in the founding team at Singapore Press Holding's internet arm, Asiaone. In 1995 when she was deputy editor at The Business Times, Margaret put the paper on the web. The Business Times was one of the first newspapers in Asia to go online. She has a reputation for clear and concise writing and editing, and for coming up with innovative and effective content concepts.
     
 
Prof. Goh Wang Ling
Prof Goh Wang Ling is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at the College of Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore. She is also the Associate Dean of Outreach and External Relations in the College. Dr Goh obtained both her B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Queen's University of Belfast (QUB) in United Kingdom. Dr Goh joined the School of EEE as a lecturer in 1996 and became an Associate Professor in 2004. Prior to her current appointment as Associate Dean, she had held the position of Assistant Chair of Students (Jul 2008 - Dec 2009) and Assistant Head of Division (Sep 2006 - Jun 2008). Dr Goh is with the Division of Circuits and Systems and teaches both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses, Digital Electronics and Digital IC Design, respectively. Professor Goh received the Nanyang Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2007 and is a three-time winner of the EEE Teaching Excellence Awards in 2005, 2006, and 2009. Dr Goh is a senior member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA and the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES). She is also the advisory committee of a number of International Technical Conferences. Dr Goh's research interests include the ultra-low-power digital/mixed signal IC designs and Nanowire SOI devices. She has co-authored 1 international professional technical reference text, 16 patents, and more than 80 research papers in international journals and conferences. Dr Goh has trained a total of 15 PhD/MEng graduates.
     
 
Prof. Foo Say Wei
Foo Say Wei has been a member of The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) since 1977 and has been an active member of the Council of the Institution since 1984. He studied in the Catholic High School from 1956 – 1967 and was the first recipient of the Dux of School Award in 1965. He was awarded the President’s Scholarship and Colombo Plan Scholarship to study Electrical Engineering at the University of Newcastle, Australia in 1968. He received the First Class Honours degree with University Gold Medal in 1972. Upon graduation, he worked as an Electrical Engineer in the Lands and Estates Department, Ministry of Defence from 1972-1973. From 1973 to 1992, he was with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO). In between, he was awarded a DSO scholarship to do a postgraduate study in Communications Engineering in Imperial College, University of London and was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 1983. His last appointment in DSO was Divisional Manager of the Electronics Division. While in DSO, he developed several electronic devices and systems. From 1992 to 2001, he was appointed as the Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS). While in NUS, he focused on technology management and tolerance design. He also helped to set up the Bachelor of Engineering Programmes and was its Deputy Director. In 2002, he joined the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University. In 2009, he was appointed as Deputy Director of Nanyang Technopreneurship Centre.
     
 
Dr. Lua Eng Keong
Dr. Lua Eng Keong is the Senior Director, Education Programmes, Science Centre Singapore, and Adjunct Faculty of the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh, USA. Prior to returning to Singapore, he was the full-time Faculty of the CMU and CMU CyLab research centers in USA and Japan. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (UK), M.Sc. degree in Telecommunications with Distinction from University College London (UCL), UK, and both the Postgraduate Diploma of Teaching in Higher Education and B.A.Sc degree in Computer Engineering with Merit from Singapore. At Cambridge, he received Microsoft Research fellowship and UK EPSRC e-Science research scholarship. He had completed 6-month research internship at the Intel Research, USA. He was awarded the University of Cambridge College Senior Scholar prizes in Computer Science research, a highly coveted accolade that is bestowed to one scholar with research work that was deemed by the Tutorial Committee to be truly outstanding. He was the inaugural recipient of prestigious 2003 Australia-Asia awards, presented by the Australian government to promising Asia research scholar for research activities and collaborations in Australia. Since 1993, he had several years of academic experience in Singapore, and worked in the international consulting industry and research laboratories for many years - R&D/Consulting Manager on international assignments at the Hewlett-Packard R&D/Consulting, Assistant Director of Singapore government telecommunications policy and regulatory agency, and Senior Member of Strategic Research in the NTT Laboratories at Tokyo, Japan. His research areas include Internet-scale architecture for live online multimedia content communications and multi-player gaming; Information network security; social media engineering and networking; cloud-based computing and engineering; and future Internet architecture design. He has over 50 research publications and 7 filed patents.. In 2008, he co-authored and co-published a new book on "Peer-to-Peer Networking and Applications", by Dr. John F. Buford, Dr. Heather Yu and Dr. Lua Eng Keong, Morgan Kauffman, ISBN 0-12374-214-5. 
     
 
Prof. Chew Yong Tian
Chew Yong Tian is a Past President of IES and Past President of the Biomedical Engineering Society Singapore. He is a Professor and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, the National University of Singapore (NUS). Prof Chew received a BEng degree, with First Class Honours, under the Pahang Consolidated Company Limited scholarship, and a MEngSc degree, both from the University of Western Australia (UWA), in 1972 and 1973, respectively. He obtained a PhD degree from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1976, under a Hackett scholarship from UWA, and a Pochobradsky scholarship from Churchill College in Cambridge. Prof Chew joined NUS in 1978. At NUS, he held several administrative positions including that of Deputy Director of the Office of Research, Vice-Dean In-Charge of Graduate Studies and founding Director of the BTech programme. Prof Chew is Chairman of the Board of Examiners, Singapore Institute of Aerospace Engineers; and former Member of the Professional Engineers Board and the Engineering Accreditation Board. He has completed more than 80 consultancy projects for clients in Singapore and Malaysia, on Wind Effects On Tall Buildings, Hydraulic Modelling, etc. His research interests include Turbulence Measurements, Bluff Body Aerodynamics, Bio-Fluid Dynamics, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Prof Chew is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Fluids and Structures, and was the Chairman/Co-Chairman of more than 10 international conferences. He has authored more than 300 international journal and conference publications, and has trained 18 PhD and 15 MEng graduates

IES will not rest on its laurels and will seek to bring the engineering profession greater recognition and raise the status of engineers both locally and internationally through closer collaboration with its stakeholders and contributions to society.

Yes. Participants can edit their newsletters until contest closes on 28th Aug, 2010 at 12 noon.
What if the winning team/ individual is not available to attend the forum and prize-giving on 4th Sept 2010?
Omnitoons may contact other contest participants to attend the forum. The winner will however, still receive the entitled prize.

What happens if my newsletter is not one of the 10 Best Content Newsletters or Top 10 Downloaded Newsletters?
If your newsletter is approved as an application by Apple, it will be on the App store for 1-2 months before being eventually removed. Only the 10 Best Content Newsletters and Top 10 Downloaded Newsletters will remain permanently on the App store.
